Hallowe’en

I’m sitting at work, in the dark. We turned the lights off to spook our customers (the door is open so they can see we’re open). We have strings of pumpkin lights and a pumpkin with colourful flashing lights inside to add to the spookiness. The lights were turned out after 5 p.m. and at 6 p.m. the building maintainance guy popped in to say he’s locking the building up early. All of our spooky efforts wasted.

The meeting today with FCT was pretty good. We started talking about some “meat and potatoes,” as Eric said. At this point the requirements document is solid, but more detail is needed. Some of the detail we’ll be able to flush out right away, but some will not be obvious until we start to think about the design. We actually got a little bit of new information about how data is stored and exchanged in the units.

Adam’s bugging me to leave work, so I better go.

Stress (Part 1)

I think I’m feeling a bit stressed out. If I sleep now maybe I’ll wake up and feel better. Let’s try it, shall we?

The Definition of a Semaphore is…

Just a quick note: the test went well, I think. There was a question that said “explain these mutex algorithms, and one other that we described in class.” I must’ve missed all of those classes because I don’t remember ever hearing about any mutex algorithms. I _did_ explain the ones listed, but just didn’t know what other ones we had spoken about in class. I left that one blank.

I’m getting hungry. I’ve seen no suggestions for food, yet. Good thing I grabbed a tiny Snickers bar before I left.

The FCT gang spared us a meeting (not that it’s bad to meet) by sending us a list of things to work on in the document. I think going to Queen’s would have been much easier.

Fifth Overall

Jeff won! I’m very happy about that. Hopefully he keeps this up and moves up from fifth spot overall. Terry’s not doing too bad, hanging in the top 10 right now. And with Jimmy in fourth overall, go team Hendrick!

I have a test this morning in my operating systems class. I didn’t study at all, so I hope I’m super smart and just know the answers to everything. Here’s hoping I go to my programming class afterwards!

I need some good food ideas for quick snacks/meals with as little waiting as possible. Right now I live off of Joe Louis and strawberry/chocolate milk, and I just don’t think that’s all that good for me. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Time for sleepies. I mean, school, for a test. Maybe I’ll get some work done today, too. oOoo, and I get to proof read an assignment for Alex. That reminds me that my TR group hopefully will be meeting with FCT tomorrow to discuss the latest draft of our SRS document again. We haven’t fully confirmed that the meeting will happen, though.

I still have to post my C question. I talked to a co-worker, Adam, about it yesterday so he knows the story. Maybe in my break at school today I can write it out on paper and submit it to my teacher/my site.

Time for my other favourite meal: a can of Coca-Cola and a marble cheese string. I don’t even get to eat the whole thing because Tico (white cat, pictured in the home of photos) always wants to share.

(That Scene from the Where’s the Love Video with the Rain)

For anyone who didn’t tune into the race, it was rained out. I just _love_ what they put on the air to kill time. It was nice to watch the coverage at Mere’s, even though there wasn’t much to watch. The race will continue from lap 39 tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.

I never did write about my FCT meeting (or, if I did, I forgot). The meeting went great. The document was good. We got some excellent feedback from our SLC advisor. We hope to meet again mid-week this week to go over some final details for the document and then, hopefully, we can all move on the design phase. I’m very pleased with our progress right now.

So far I’ve only really used the news section of my blog, thinking that someday I’ll post some school/work/play specific posts that would go into the other sections (named the same, respectfully). I have an interesting C related question that I may post into the school section–we’ll have to see.

I’ve posted my current desktop background into the photos section in the Wallpapers directory. It’s a zip file with a bitmap contained. The image is from the very end of the movie American Psycho. I have it stretched to fit the screen (the image is in a 4:3 ratio) with a black background colour.

Go Jeff, Go!

Well, I haven’t thought of anything more interesting than my signature update yesterday. I did sleep again after waking up earlier. I was awoken by Cathie calling to get me up for the trip to Mere and Steve’s. I’m pretty excited about this, because I haven’t been out to Mere and Steve’s for a while.

Mozilla Thunderbird died again. I thought it might’ve been something to do with my update to the SSL libraries, so I rebooted, but still no go. I’m trying Mozilla Firebird now, and I’ll install the Thunderbird binaries for now. But that’ll come later. That’ll come after NASCAR.

Ahh, Good Ol’ UTC -0500

I’ve been awake since 6 a.m. I presume, anyway, that it was 6 a.m. All of my computers say it was, and I assume they all knew about daylight savings.

I was pretty bored last night. I started to update my Linux environment on my laptop and left some junk compiling overnight. Mozilla Thunderbird’s compile just stopped–I can’t explain it. I wanted to try to get my wireless card working with Linux last night but I broke the installation and have to wait for the laptop to stop being busy.

I don’t think I’m up for real. I feel tired. I’ll either sleep now, or nap later. Now sounds good to me! :)

I’m trying to think of something neat that happened yesterday that I can share with you. About the best thing I can think of so far is that I have a new e-mail signature. If I can think of anything better I’ll let you know.

Don’t Damage Your Amygdala

After a looooooooooong two days without an update, here’s a quick one to get you through. It’s my mom’s birthday today, so I need to be ready with open arms when she walks in from work.

The bacon was awesome. I’ll post more later, but it was awesome. I finished the disposable camera that I got when Alex and I were supposed to see Hanson the first time and got it developed at Wal-Mart. I got one of those picture CDs, too, so I didn’t have to bother myself with scanning them all in. The picture CD did not stop me from hunting through the pile of CRAP labelled PHP photo album software. I wanted to put up a decent little photo album site where I could upload the images in nice folders, but all of the software out there wants to look like an amygdala and use ImageMagick and a MySQL database…blah…blah. So, I’ve uploaded the pictures to simple folders and they’re available here. I think there’s a lot of great pictures in there (and none of my ugly mutt (and by that I mean me, because there are actually pictures of my dog (not to say that he’s any uglier than any other dog, and not to call him a mutt, because he is well behaved, but calling him a mutt fits with what you might be thinking))). Wow, C meets the english language.

ryanjallen.net would like to retract previous references to Alex and Stephanie as a sort-of-sister and sort-of-cousin, respectfully. Both are nothing less than full-blown family. ryanjallen.net would also like to add that it was a pleasure to visit with Amy in Toronto, as well. Our deepest apologies, and I hope that you will all love me despite my errors.

Moving on, I’m glad the day is over. The test was okay, and my group meeting was good. I was so pleased with myself that I made the bus! I really didn’t expect to, although I did go to bed early last night.

I’m really pumped about my TR group’s meeting with the FCT gang this week. I think we’ll have a solid document ready for them, and I think they’ll be pleased.

Oh! Hold on…I’ll be right back.

Edit: touched to bring above next article.

I’m Back

Okay–I’m back. So where was I…oh, right. I’m totally zonked. 6hrs of work is a lot. Tomorrow’s payday, but all of my earnings will go towards something. Bills, or something. If I’m lucky it might go towards an upcoming trip I have planned!

In November I am participating in an allergy study at Kingston General Hospital, which will add a few hours of activity to my schedule scattered throughout the month. I’m also hoping to visit Hamilton/Toronto. A client of KOS, we call him Super Dad, works at VIA Rail and gives us free upgrades to VIA 1 all of the time, so I’m hoping to get in on some of that. I’ll be too busy for work, most of the month. If my TR group ever gets through our SRS for FCT then we’ll have to work on the design document–killer.

Today was the first mention I’ve heard at work about my leaving (hopefully) in April. It was weird to hear my boss say it, but also refreshing. My three years of duty, so far, was respectfully mentioned. It’ll be weird to leave my first job.

But, forget about thinking six months down the road: let’s focus on tomorrow! Three words: rotisserie peameal bacon. I am so excited. I’ll try to take pictures.

I’ve written enough for now. OUT!
