Mekong Restaurant

After completing virtually none of the chores I set out to yesterday I met with Evan to drop something off at the University, and eventually we both met with Sarah to have dinner. We met Sarah at the corner of Bronson and Somerset as the “mysterious” restaurant that Sarah wanted to go to was nearby. Knowing that this was in Chinatown (or Asiatown, as if that is more PC) I was concerned about the possibility of having to eat Chinese food. I have the mindset that I do not really care for Chinese, however I admit I haven’t tried eating any in years.

When we met Sarah we were given a choice of a Chinese or Vietnamese restaurant. Evan and I unanimously selected the Vietnamese restaurant, though we later found out that the restaurant, Mekong Restaurant, is actually Asian cuisine, and not specifically limited to Vietnamese. We arrived relatively early–shortly after 5 p.m.–but the restaurant was busy. When asked if we had a reservation we answered no (which Evan admitted was slightly embarrassing) but we were sat immediately anyway.

Sarah used to live in the area (not in Asiatown, but within walking distance) so she had been to Mekong a few times. She informed us of the procedure of ordering and began walking us through the menu. We all shared Chinese tea while we made our selections.

To start we had two orders of the Vietnamese spring rolls and an order of the rice paper shredded pork rolls. The Vietnamese spring rolls were served with fresh mint and lettuce and we were encouraged to wrap the spring rolls in both before dipping them into the fish oil. The Orovans were hesitant at first but I was adventurous enough to give this a try…and it was fantastic. The rice paper rolls were also good, but I preferred the spring rolls.

Between the four of us we shared four entrees: stir fried sliced beef with orange flavour; General Tao chicken; fried noodle with mixed vegetables; and, chicken fried rice. Our entrees were served with a hefty container of steamed rice. Each one of the entrees was excellent with the General Tao chicken and fried noodles slightly topping the chicken fried rice and beef, in my personal opinion. With four entrees between us we also had plenty of left overs, which I luckily ended up with, for future enjoyment.

I plan on returning to Mekong in the future as I have zero complaints about the quality, quantity, price, speed, or service. If ever I have a visitor who wants Asian this is probably were I will recommend we go–for now.

(And to finish out the evening we had coffee at Bridgehead (actually, I had a hot chocolate and it was TERRIBLE), which was followed by watching hockey at my apartment, and eventually playing hockey in what ended up being an incredibly tense showdown.)

Update: I forgot to mention, my fortune reads: “you are very talented with your hands”.

A Friend: So, what’s your fortune?

Me: “You are insightful and observant.” That’s not a fortune, that’s just a statement!

A Friend: That’s rather insightful and observant of you.
