Sweet iPhone 1.1.1 goodness.
With the announcement of the iPhone 1.1.1 “jailbreak”, and the near-to-follow announcement of the iPhoneSimFree unlock for 1.1.1, I was excited to make the leap into mucky waters. The jailbreak, in its current form, is far from intuitive. It’s a clever trick that requires a good deal of setup and handholding, at the moment. Further to that, the documentation is okay but it has a few holes in it. Lucky for me, I have some experience with computers.
So after battling with the update for a little while, and shelling out for the iPhoneSimFree unlock, I am now an early adopter of iPhone firmware 1.1.1 on the Rogers Wireless network.
Much was gained, but a little was lost. The perks include:
- the ability to re-order my stock listing in iPhone’s stock widget;
- the ability to re-order cities in the weather listing;
- new calculator icon (oOooo);
- a little thing called the iTunes Music Store!;
- configurable text message tones;
- home button double click!;
- keyboard “.” shortcut;
- Safari developer console;
- iPod video playback preferences;
- TV out; and, of course,
- louder speakerphone and receiver volume.
What did I lose?
- custom ringtones; and,
- YouTube.
I wouldn’t be surprised if these two things sort themselves out over the course of the next few days. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see the jailbreak procedure simplified and an open source unlock. Regardless, I’m a happy guy who has already downloaded the fee single of the week via the WiFi iTMS!
