I was reading some news from Germany when I noticed a story that was all-too-familiar to me. Do you remember the Liberal beer and popcorn money scandal from a few years back? It was a response to the Conservative’s day care subsidy. Well, Heinz Buschkowsky, a municipal politician in Berlin area, has criticized the federal government’s plan for a home-care subsidy, suggesting that lower class parents will drink it away.
If the objective is integration, then he has a point, however badly he’s obscured it behind his ill chosen phrasing. (To the extent that people on his end of the German political spectrum would care, which is speculative as I’m not terribly familiar with German politics.)
There are those who would argue that integration is not necessarily a good thing, but then those people usually come from also-ran countries.
