Karlsruhe Tram Collides with Police Car

Hot on the heals of an accident between two trams in Karlsruhe comes another tram accident–this one involving an on-duty police car and a tram. I read that the police car took the full impact of the tram on the driver’s side door. The police officer did not survive the crash.

Karlsruhe Tram Accident

Whilst some might argue that there is larger, more devestating things to worry about at the moment, I have just read some news that hits close to home (to me): two trams have collided in downtown Karlsruhe. Reports indicate that 27 people have been injured, some severely, and one report suggests that up to [...]

The Challenge: A Year in 100 Photographs

I am faced with a difficult challenge: a year in 100 photographs.

Before I left Ms. Kirkey was kind enough to prepare for me a photo album with a collection of photos of friends and family. I kept this photo album on my coffee table the entire time I was in Germany. It was [...]

Fall of the Berlin Wall

I don’t really remember it, and I didn’t really appreciate it until my visit to Berlin in September–today marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. There’s lots you can read about it, of course. I particularly enjoyed this CBC Archives video found on YouTube.

Child Care Subsidies

I was reading some news from Germany when I noticed a story that was all-too-familiar to me. Do you remember the Liberal beer and popcorn money scandal from a few years back? It was a response to the Conservative’s day care subsidy. Well, Heinz Buschkowsky, a municipal politician in Berlin area, has criticized the [...]

Come On Everybody: Group Hug

Have you noticed that I haven’t written much lately? I promise that it’s not due to a lack of things to write about, nor is it due to a lack of time to write–I just don’t want to. I don’t want to write about the thing that I would have to write about: leaving [...]

So You Think I Can Run a Marathon?

A few people have asked me about my participation in the Einstein Marathon. My training was fairly limited so I wasn’t even certain that I could finish; if I would finish I expected it to take me nearly 5 hours. I expected to not be able to walk, talk, eat, or breath if and [...]

Marathon Playlist – Suggestions Needed

Alright everyone: In less than 24 hours I am off to Ulm to try to run a marathon. In less than 40 hours my feet will hit the pavement. As I’ve written before, I expect it will take me 4-5 hours–that’s a lot of music.

I need song, album, artists suggestions to keep me [...]

Berlin Wrap-Up

I was in Berlin. The proof: I know about the Ampelmann. Oh, and there are my photos from the trip.

Church was lively and fun, the Currywurst museum was great, and the rain saved itself until the end of my weekend. Well, actually, it rained about an hour before I had to set out [...]

A Ryan Collection of Thoughts

I don’t usually encounter a lot of young people when I am travelling. My hotels are full of older people, Starbucks is quiet and empty when I visit in the morning, and of course driving around doesn’t lend itself to encountering new people. But, I have realized that the bike tour is a place [...]
