Hello friends and randoms,

The National Capital Marathon is nearly upon us and I am about to inflict unexpected agony on my body. To help ease the pain I will pass the time listening to music, which should be both motivational and upbeat. The last marathon I ran included some tracks suggested by you the people and I would like to appeal to you again for some updated suggestions.

Please, share your running/workout song suggestions in the comments below. I need to build a playlist that is literally hours long (probably 5 hours, though I hope I can do the run in a little less time) so I need all of the suggestions I can get. Ask your friends!

If you’re in the Ottawa area please also consider finding a place along the route to cheer everybody on!

Update: Here’s the marathon playlist I just copied to my iPod.

I read a few articles today about high schools in Ontario charging fees for some classes. One of these articles was the Globe’s Most Ontario high schools charge illegal course fees. Before today, I had no idea this was going on.

Let me share a story with you. When I was in my first year at high school I was encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities. I played on the volleyball team, and afterwards wanted to join many of my friends who played on the basketball team. I don’t remember what the cost was to play on these teams, but I think it was in the $40 or $50 area. My parents couldn’t afford this. I didn’t play on the basketball team, or on any sports team after this.

(Side story: Matt Larsh was on both teams and was incredibly kind to offer to give me the money to play; he even offered to keep it discrete so that I wouldn’t be embarrassed to not afford it. I declined, trying to keep a straight face when I said it wasn’t the money. For a 14-year-old, this was an amazing gesture.)

I was never going to play basketball, so missing out on this team did not impact my livelihood at all. But this cost–a seemingly small one–was a prohibitive factor. A cost like this imposed on a class could have been devastating. You can imagine the impact this could have had on my future if I didn’t have the chance to take some of the computer science classes I took.

I am strongly opposed to these sorts of fees. I am sure that there are procedures in place to allow those who cannot afford to partake, but this is an avenue that I suspect many don’t go down because of the potential for embarrassment. Education is not an area that we can afford to put up these excluding barriers.

Update: It is worth noting that CS wrote to me about this issue and explained that educators are faced with this problem due to a lack of funding in schools. This is obvious, but the sentence that really caught my attention was “kids have access to better technology than at school”. Which is true, and sad that we have so much personal wealth but such a limited collective interest in our youth’s education.

I would say that my success rate in catching things in this manor is quite high–maybe 90% or better. It just happened with a milk chocolate covered raisin.

It’s not the super ability I would have chosen (I’m sure I’ve written in the past about my desire to control time) but I’m happy with what I’ve got.

Update: It happened again today, with an empty McDonald’s soda cup. The cup actually flipped a few times before I caught it. It was incredible.

Last night I step onto the elevator on the 14th floor of my building. Just before stepping on a guy steps off. The little light didn’t clear to indicate that this was my elevator, but I stepped on anyway thinking it was a little glitch (as sometimes happens). I pressed the B1 button to go to the basement and the door closed. The elevator headed up to the 15th floor. I closed the door again. Up to the 16th floor.

“Asshole!”, I yelled (in my head).

This old guy had pressed 15, 16, and 17 on the elevator so that he would have enough time to get to his apartment and back to the elevator to press the button before the elevator would pass by the 14th floor. He was effectively holding the elevator for himself. In a building with 17 floors, 12 apartments per floor, and only two elevators he felt that the extra time he may have to wait to get the elevator in fair turn was more valuable than those who might also want to use the elevator.

A part of me wanted to ride the course and return to the 14th floor, holding the elevator for this guy (if he wasn’t already waiting for it) so that I could give him a lecture about sharing. He has effectively proven that he fits the “you get younger as you get older” stereotype. But rather than him having the innocence and/or lack of wisdom a child might have, he has no excuse.

I decided, instead, to press the following floor buttons: 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7. He wanted to make me wait for 3 floors, so he will wait for 6. I took the stairs down–happily.

Update: The guy died a few days following this incident.

Have you noticed that I haven’t written much lately? I promise that it’s not due to a lack of things to write about, nor is it due to a lack of time to write–I just don’t want to. I don’t want to write about the thing that I would have to write about: leaving Germany.

I just composed a farewell e-mail to say goodbye to those who I could personally say goodbye to before leaving. After I added everyone to the “to” field I realized that there were 60 names in this list and I thought it unfair for me to not write something here about my leaving. 60 people who have personally affected my life in the past year. 60 people that I can put more than just a face to–people whom I have relate experiences and emotions to. Surely you must understand how it can be hard to leave.

Last night I shipped my personal affects to Canada which turned out to be a long, time-consuming process. After spending well over an hour at the UPS warehouse I was received at the Mihut household where we ate a delicious beer can chicken, with potatoes and a salad, and then watched a couple of recently-aired TV shows. It was really relaxing, but sad for me at the same time. I definitely had the thoughts that I did not want to leave.

***

I started writing this post hours ago, but could not finish with the trip to the Asian restaurant, checking-in for the flight, saying goodbye, going for a final run, etc. Unfortunately now I don’t have time to reflect further, as I have to go and get ready for dinner, plus pack this evening. But let it be known that the people here are awesome and I will miss them dearly.

Update: Feel free to track me on flight AC839 tomorrow. No stalkers please. Thanks.

I need song, album, artists suggestions to keep me pumped and motivated during the run. Even more of a reason: if you suggest a song then when I hear it I will be reminded of you. What more motivation would I need?

Please, suggest away (even if I don’t know you)!

Update: Here is the Marathon Playlist. It worked quite well–I finished much faster than I expected (4h 4m, I expected 5h).

Today I stumbled upon the famous 1979 video rendition of the Canadian national anthem. Back in the day when TV stations used to “sign off” at the end of a night they would play this video; they would also start the broadcast day with this video. Even though it is now 30 years old it still does a good job of capturing the Canadian spirit (which, arguably, hasn’t changed fundamentally).

Update: It is also worth pointing out what is, perhaps, my favourite rendition of the same anthem: as sung by thousands of loyal hockey fans. Every time I see it–from when I watched it live, to just now–I get an overwhelming rush.

I write to you from my Superior Room with Castellana Ave. View in the luxurious Hesperia Madrid. I am enjoying a complimentary Granny Smith apple (they literally have a bowl of them by the elevator on each floor) as I draw my second bath of the evening. My comfort is maximized by the provided bath robe that I am wearing.

Just try to take a moment to imagine how superb that must be.

Now, add the best Nine Inch Nails concert in the history of concerts.

The concert was spectacular. I showed up after doors opened, but skipped the line because I purchased my ticket from the fan-pre-order on nin.com. There was literally no line at the pre-order by this time (all the hardcore fans were already inside)–I got my ticket and walked right in.

The venue was La Riviera–a club that you can pack 2500 people into. I don’t know how many were there tonight, but it was pretty full. When I entered there were probably only a couple of hundred people in the club so I had a fine spot on the floor.

Alec Empire–a German musician–opened. You may have heard of the band Atari Teenage Riot, which he was a founding member of. He was good. It was just him and a woman as a part of the performance; she was on the machines while Alec was singing and playing a bit of guitar. There were a few fans that were overly enthusiastic jumping around and making me throw a couple of elbows, but it was a good warm up for the NIN performance.

As the anticipation for Nine Inch Nails raised, the crowed became more and more packed together. I started back about 8 rows, to the left side of the stage. Little did I know that this was actually a bit too close to the action! When the performance opened and the crowd started moving there were a few people who retreated to the back because of the crushing sways.

The set list and performance were incredible. I didn’t keep track of the set list but I’m sure it will show up. Some highlights were Reptile, Meet Your Master, Burn, Non-Entity, Something I Can Never Have, and–maybe my favourite of the show–the Downward Spiral.

Somehow I ended up being dead centre, about 5th person back from the barrier. I’m not sure if you would call what I was in a “mosh pit”, but there were plenty of times when the only thing keeping me from falling over while I was jumping around were the bodies of everyone else. This wasn’t without consequence: my toes were really beat up. My advice: don’t wear sandals if you might be in such a situation.

The packed people also made it quite hot. I was quite relieved when the security team started passing back some water bottles. The odd drink, and the occasional sprinkle really helped. My shirt was literally soaked through with sweat by the end. Outside was 28 degrees (at midnight!) and it felt cool to me.

The show was so awesome that I decided to get a t-shirt at the end. Watch for it–you might see it some day. I’ll also add here that the Metro in Madrid is awesome.

Already this trip was worth it. I even forgot that I am sick. Good night!

Update: I forgot to add “Last” to my list of noteworthy songs. The song was still in my head this morning. The set list.

Have you ever thought about how in Canada you will now-and-then hear someone playing the bagpipes at a time when you least expect? I am sure that I have walked out of work in Ottawa and heard bagpipes, or been walking downtown and heard Scotland the Brave; this experience even goes back to when I lived in Kingston.

Today I realized that I haven’t heard any pipes in all of the time I have been in Germany. Perhaps this is not surprising, given that the bagpipes are a somewhat niche instrument, though I believe it is noteworthy. I am almost certain that, of those who read this post, someone will hear the bagpipes being played before I make my return.

Update: Bagpipes may not be quite as common here, but I did see someone pooping just off of a trail. Now, I wouldn’t say this is common here but I can’t say that I’ve ever witnessed someone squatting over the ground to lay a turd in Canada. So, there’s that.

I am a big fan of Canada Day–especially since moving to Ottawa. This year it’s a little different, not being in Canada and being at work. I miss it; I would love to be in Ottawa today. It’s too bad I didn’t decide to go back just for 3 days and not tell anyone.

If anyone asks nicely I’ll post the video of Adam J. dancing, drunk out of his mind, on Parliament Hill at Canada Day a few years ago.

Update: You can find the aforementioned video here.
